Sports and Recreation Programs: Spring/Summer 2010

We welcome out-of-town registrations based on providers’ guidelines. All recreation programs follow the policies and procedures of that provider. You must register with that program provider to participate.

All-Stars Soccer: Location TBD
Participants will be taught the fundamentals of soccer through basic drills and practice. Skills will be developed on an individual basis and athletes will be challenged to improve on a weekly basis. A non-competitive game will be played every week. (This program will provide facilitative assistance for children with special needs. Students who enjoy a non-competitive sports activity are also encouraged to attend.) Jennifer Spinale, certified in Special Education, will coach this program. Program is open to children in K through grade 8.
Saturdays, May 1, 2010 - June 12, 2010 (No class 5/29/10)
Children will be grouped accordingly and designated an AM time slot.
Fee: $75.00 per child
Special Olympics Track Program: Scituate High School Track
This program is open to children ages 7 through grade 8 (Age to 7 to train and ages 8 and up to compete) who have been identified with a learning disability or special needs. We also welcome Peer Role Models to to partner with a special needs child as a "unified partner" (there is a division in the Olympics for unified partners). Weekly instructional track program will include training in 50m, 100m and Turbo Javelin. Program is designed to prepare runners for Special Olympic competition. All you need is sneakers, water bottle and a desire to run and have fun. Parent Participation is welcome!

Yoga for the Special Child: Scituate Recreation Multi-Purpose Room
Gita Brown, MM, MT-BC, is offering an 8 week program for children with special
needs. This therapeutic method of Yoga was developed by the world renowned
Sonia Sumar over 30 years ago, and has grown to international acclaim. This
style of yoga is gentle, safe, and requires no special equipment. By
practicing this style of yoga, students realize benefits which include
mindfulness, concentration, physical ease, emotional balance, and ultimately
peace of mind and happiness. Students will participate in five essential
yoga practices: music, breathing practices, cleansing practices, body
postures, and deep relaxation. Populations served include, but are not
limited to: individuals with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy,
Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder,
Learning Delays, Neurological Disorders, Epilepsy, Spina Bifida, and other
physical and mental developmental challenges. Students in wheelchairs are
welcome to attend, as are non-verbal students. Please wear loose and
comfortable clothing, dressing in layers is recommended.

All-Stars Summer CAMP: Scituate Recreation's Multi-Purpose Room (air conditioned) Scituate Recreation and C.O.R.S.E. (Community of Resources for Special Education) are proud to continue their SUMMER CAMP for 2010. This two week camp is a structured professionally supervised setting to create an environment where children will have a fun, successful experience while participating in a variety of sports, gym activities, arts & crafts, water- play, story time, etc. We will be joined weekly with special guests and performers and have multiple field trips for the kids to enjoy! Each day has a different theme; no two days are the same! This program is geared toward any child who would enjoy a positive, more relaxed camp experience as well as providing facilitative assistance for children identified with learning disabilities or special needs. All children will benefit from a non-competitive environment, in which they are provided with instruction, skill practice and promoted to use good team building and sportsmanship. Activities are broken down and basic skills and rules are taught to participants. The kids can pursue the activities at their own pace. The main emphasis of the camp is for children of all abilities to have an enjoyable summer social "recreation" experience. Participants should bring a snack, lunch, extra drinks, sun lotion and a bathing suit. Fee includes t-shirt and all activities. Instructor/Coaches: Mike Connor and Jennifer Spinale assisted by a wonderful team of coaches (ratio: 1:3). There are 25 slots available. Within this program 13 slots are reserved for children with an IEP. The remaining 12 spots are first come first serve regardless of needs.

Scituate Recreation and CORSE are sponsoring this new and innovative water sports program for up to 40 children with disabilities, entering 1st grade - 22 years of age. A participant must be on an IEP or 504 service plan to participate. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the athletes will build skill sets in adaptive windsurfing, Hawaiian outrigger canoeing, and sailing. On Thursday and Friday, they will practice stand-up surfing and surfing at the beach. The camp will provide specialized instructors and equipment from AccesSportAmerica, a national, non-profit founded in 1995 that inspires higher function and fitness for children and adults of all disabilities through safe entry to high-challenge sports. Participating students can be non-ambulatory, non-verbal and do not need to know how to swim.
Please note: if the weather is inclement, the session will still continue, waiting 20 minutes after each sound of thunder before going back into the water. If the weather is simply intolerable, we will run a conditioning and soccer clinic during that session time at the Jenkins school gymnasium.

Therapeutic Horseback Riding: Booth Hill Farm
The C.O.R.S.E. Foundation in collaboration with Booth Hill Farm of Scituate is pleased to offer our Therapeutic Riding Program for children with special needs. Therapeutic Riding has many benefits for children with special needs including physical, sensory, emotional, cognitive and social opportunities. This program will introduce the child to all aspects of the riding experience including: becoming familiar with the farm setting, the animals, the equipment and the aspects of riding. The program will be instructed by Linda Adams, Owner and Director of Riding Services at Booth Hill Farm. Linda is a licensed riding instructor, teaching locally for over 30 years. She is a member of AHA (American Hippo-therapy Association) and NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped).
Six week program, June 28 through August 6
Ages 5 and up
Two sessions:

Tuesday/Thursday 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Fee $150, $175 for children new to the program (to cover 30 minute evaluation)
All children are required to wear pants, boots or sneakers, and have a helmet.

Funtastics Gymnastics

Funtastics is continuing to offer its terrific gymnastics class designed especially for CORSE on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-4:15. This will be the third year this successful program will be run. This class is targeted for students in Kindergarten and up.
The program will be taught by
Patti Miller, Owner and Director of Funtastics, and her staff. This fun learning environment provides children the opportunity to:
• Gain gross motor mobility
• Have exposure to a variety of sensory
integration stations
• Participate in positive peer interactions
• Follow instructions in a supportive and
nurturing environment
• Encourage overall fitness

Funtastics Week-long Summer Clinic: Sessions will include gymnastics, fitness games, fine and gross motor activities as well as crafts and structured free-play. Class size will be limited, ages 5 and up. The range of children who are participating in the current program is very diverse, from those with mild special needs to those with more intense. The instructors have been phenomenal in making this a fun, energetic exercise session for the kids, who enjoy it immensely.
