In the spirit of the holiday season the Scituate CORSE Foundation was pleased to sponsor the "Let's Go On The North Pole Express" event on Sunday, December 5th at at the Greenbush MBTA Station in Scituate. CORSE reserved rail cars for children with special needs and their families to enjoy this magical ride in a relaxed setting with special accommodations for families. The event, sponsored by SHORE and the Scituate Library Foundation, included elves, cookies, chocolate milk, a bag of goodies, and a silver bell from Santa for each child, as well as a reading of Chris Van Allseburg's Polar Express. CORSE sponsored 194 families loaded with holiday cheer and smiles! Thank you to Marynell Henry for coordinating.

The Scituate CORSE Foundation held its 5th annual Gala at the Scituate Country club in October. CORSE would like to acknowledge all those individuals and businesses that donated to and participated in the event’s success (click on Sponsors/Donors). Thank you for being part of our “Community of Resources” to provide programming and resources for children with special needs. None of this would be possible without Jennifer O’Neill and Julie Jordan (Gala Chairpersons) Gina McClellan (Auction Coordinator), Scituate Country Club, Mike Connor (Auctioneer) and Dom D'Arcangelo (DJ). We are very grateful for your continued support!

Students Learn Watersports at Maritime Adventures

This summer 40 students—many of whom had never participated in any kind of watersports—experienced the thrill of sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding and canoeing at Scituate’s new Maritime Center.

From August 2-6 the Scituate CORSE Foundation sponsored “Maritime Adventures” by AccesSportAmerica, a national non-profit organization founded in 1995 that inspires higher function and fitness for children and adults of all disabilities through high-challenge sports. The program received rave reviews from participants and parents.

Skilled and compassionate instructors from AccesSport, along with a team of dedicated volunteers, utilized specially designed equipment to teach children with a wide range of disabilities to sail, windsurf, Hawaiian outrigger canoe and paddleboard. Many of these children have never seen land from an ocean view before.  Parents reported that even children who were apprehensive on day one quickly overcame their fears and couldn't wait to come back the next day. Needless to say, it was a fantastic experience for the kids, parents, volunteers and staff involved.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support of the Scituate Recreation Department, the Scituate Harbormaster, generous local businesses and caring community volunteers. Thank you for helping to bring this wonderful program to special needs children in our community!

Thanks to our sponsors, players, donators and bidders,  we raised over $26,000 that will be used to provide programs and resources for our community's children, parents and teachers.  We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this possible; we are very grateful for your support and generosity.

CORSE Acknowledges Overwhelming Generosity of Scituate Harbor Yacht Club

On June 4th the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club held its annual Gerard F. McCourt Cup charity golf outing and auction to benefit CORSE. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of SHYC members, golfers, donors, and participants, approximately $25,000 was raised.  It was a night to remember – full of smiles, laughs, tears and above all a true spirit of giving back to those children with the greatest needs. Very special thanks to SHYC Commodore Peter Finnegan, House Chair Rich Mullen, golf event chair Terence Faherty and the golf committee Tom Anderson, Eugene Sullivan, John Martin, John Barrett, Dan Flaherty, auctioneer Jay Hughes, and members Peter and Lori Gates, who made this evening possible.

From 2006-2009, CORSE has dispersed over $215,000 worth of programs and initiatives back into the community. For the current request cycle, we have budgeted another $60,000 to continue running our most successful programs for the remainder of 2010 and approved an additional $27,524 worth of new initiatives, including:

  • Maritime Adventures through Access Sports: Week-long camp for adaptive windsurfing, Hawaiian outrigger canoeing, sailing and surfing

  • Expanded Social Thinking Training for faculty, aides and parents

  • Peer Model Program for Social Skills Programs: 5th grade mentors assisting with K-3 social skills class

  • "Let's Go" Community Events: Planned family events - movies, bowling, swimming

  • Technology, such as Lexia, Brain Pop and Dimension M

  • Click here for a complete list of programs and resources.

This could not be possible without the continued support of our CORSE membership, the individuals and businesses who give donations and/or participate in our Gala and Golf Tournament, and the generous grants funds we have received. Thank you, we are so very grateful!!   Click here  to read press coverage about the RFP Awards.

CORSE recently launched a new initiative called “Lets’ Go”, a variety of ongoing family-focused events (movies, bowling, dining out, swimming, and more) designed to provide a positive community experience for children with special needs and their families. These events will take place in a relaxed setting with modifications made to ensure the best possible experience for the children and their families. By participating in “Let’s Go” programs, children with special needs will become more comfortable in these environments and be able to practice their social skills in a friendly atmosphere.   These events will also provide an opportunity for families to build community relationships.
